I got a call from some friends saying they had just found a little kitten that they were hoping to find a home for. I agreed to take the kitten since I was thinking about getting Banjo a friend anyway. Callie, as I call her, was found wandering around in a shopping center parking lot with no other cats in sight. Not wanting to leave the poor little kitten in the parking lot, my friends took her in. Staying in the parking lot meant that she was in danger of getting hit by cars or even swept away by a raccoon at night.
When I went to pick Callie up I saw just how small she really was. She looked like she was around 3 weeks old which is very young for a kitten to be away from their mother. She was still in that awkward stumble stage of walking.
I took her home and got a can of wet food to see if she would eat any and boy was she hungry! She scarfed down two spoon fulls! Callie may not need kitten formula after all since she is eating wet food.
Bruno the Boxer and Spencer the Pit Bull check out the new kitten. They smelled the canned food and came over and took there submissive, waiting positions, thinking they were getting fed. That's when they saw that a kitten was on the counter. Well Spencer it looks like another one of those animals has taken over again... Bruno and Spencer know the drill, kitties first.
After giving Callie some food I took her to meet Banjo her new "brother". Banjo is a couple weeks older than Callie, although I do not know his exact age either, Banjo was at the developmental stage of a 6 week old kitten.
Banjo gave Callie a once over, checking her out. "Atta boy Banjo, be nice to the little baby." Notice the difference in size between the two kittens, Banjo is significantly bigger than Callie.
Banjo let out a hiss which was immediately followed by me giving him a one finger poke correction. "Tsht". I gave Banjo the same correction that I would give a dog if it had growled. Since he is so small I only used one finger and a light poke.
Banjo learned his lesson there and backed away from Callie. I had to correct Banjo a few more times after that but he only every hissed and let out a wine. If he had struck callie with his paw then it would be much harder to have them live together. Eventually Banjo will get used to having Callie around.
Your letting it use my litter box too! Come on that's my room!
Banjo is not a huge fan of Callie and he stays at a distance.
Callie on the other hand seems to be enjoying her new home and has settled down under my desk by my feet.
What's that Smell?!
Callie is using the litter box like a good little kitten but since she is still getting used to her feet, she tends to sit down in her poo while she is going. She turns into a stinky little bugger when shes done. Normally a mother cat will clean her kitten but since Callie has no mother cat I have to take her over to the sink and wash her off. I'll gently take her by the scruff, like a mothercat would do, which instanly relaxes them. That way Callie doesn't move while she is getting wet.
In the picture above you can see how callie is moving around. She ends up stepping in her own poo!
"Eww Callie! Your one stinky little kitty." Notice that the poop got on her tail as well and check out those paws!
Almost Friends
Banjo still isn't too fond of Callie but he is getting used to her. When I left to go to lunch with a friend I put them both in the cage together since Banjo will knock all my stuff over trying to jump on my desk. Both cats were on opposite sides of the cage when I left but when I came back they were sleeping next to each other!
Once Banjo realized I had opened the cage he jumped out as if he didn't want me seeing him and Callie getting along. What a "tough" little kitty!
